Tour Overview

The Machame Route, nicknamed the "Whiskey Route," is a scenic and popular path to summit Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak at 5,895 meters or 19,341 feet. This 7-day itinerary, with 6 nights on the mountain, offers excellent acclimatization by traversing diverse landscapes from lush rainforests to alpine deserts and arctic zones, giving an 85-90% summit success rate for fit trekkers. It's moderately challenging with steep sections like the Barranco Wall, best for those with some hiking experience. The trek starts and ends in Moshi or Arusha, Tanzania, covering about 62 kilometers or 37 miles. Expect 5-8 hours of daily hiking with a "climb high, sleep low" approach on Day 4 to aid acclimatization.

Day to day itinerary

Drive about an hour from Moshi to Machame Gate at 1,800 meters or 5,905 feet. Register, meet your crew, and hike through lush rainforest with moss-covered trees, ferns, and possible monkey sightings. The trail ascends gently, gaining 995 meters to Machame Camp at 2,835 meters or 9,300 feet. It covers 11 kilometers or 7 miles in 5-6 hours. Trails can be wet and muddy—gaiters are handy. Enjoy a picnic lunch en route, dinner at camp, and a briefing. This is a solid intro day for acclimatization.

Climb steeply out of the forest into open moorland with giant lobelias and ericas. Views of the Shira Plateau and Kibo’s glaciers start to appear. The ascent is steady with some rocky sections, gaining 1,005 meters to Shira Camp at 3,840 meters or 12,600 feet. It’s 5 kilometers or 3 miles, taking 6-7 hours. You’re now in the heath zone, so watch for early altitude effects and stay hydrated. Overnight in tents with meals in a mess tent.

This is the key "climb high, sleep low" acclimatization day. Ascend to Lava Tower, a 90-meter volcanic remnant at 4,600 meters or 15,100 feet, then descend to Barranco Camp at 3,950 meters or 13,000 feet. You’ll gain 760 meters up and drop 890 meters down, covering 13 kilometers or 8 miles in 7-8 hours. Have a picnic lunch at the tower with an optional short rock climb for views. This day relieves fatigue and sets you up for success. Barranco Camp offers stunning starry skies under Kibo’s Southern Ice Fields.

Start with a scramble up the Barranco Wall, a 257-meter rocky face where you’ll use hands for balance. Then traverse alpine desert under Kibo’s western glaciers to Karanga Camp at 4,000 meters or 13,100 feet, gaining 220 meters. It’s a short 8-kilometer or 5-mile hike, taking about 4 hours. The wall is challenging but rewarding with epic views. The terrain turns dry and dusty, so pace yourself steadily.

A final acclimatization ascent through arid scree slopes to Barafu Camp at 4,680 meters or 15,350 feet, gaining 680 meters. This short 6-kilometer or 4-mile hike takes 3-4 hours, leaving the afternoon to rest for the midnight summit push. You’ll see Mawenzi Peak in the distance. This is a light day to conserve energy. Check gear, eat early, and sleep by 8 PM as cold winds pick up at this high base camp.

Summit night begins around midnight, trekking to Uhuru Peak via Stella Point. The steep, icy switchbacks to Stella Point at 5,756 meters or 18,875 feet may require crampons. From Stella, it’s a 1-hour push to the summit at 5,895 meters or 19,341 feet. You’ll gain 1,215 meters up and descend 2,715 meters to Mweka Camp at 3,100 meters or 10,170 feet, covering 25 kilometers or 16 miles in 13-15 hours (7-8 hours up, 6-7 hours down). Watch the sunrise over glaciers and craters—an unforgettable moment. Descend to Barafu for a break, then continue to Mweka through rainforest. Celebrate with photos and certificates
