Ngorongoro

The crater of wonders

As the largest unbroken volcanic caldera in the world, Ngorongoro Crater is home to over 25,000 creatures and spans 260 square kilometers. Within the caldera, it is possible to see the Big Five and a variety of other animals like black rhinos, hyenas, zebras, and flamingos that populate the soda lakes. Because the crater is a closed ecosystem, wildlife are present throughout the year.

Best time to visit Ngorongoro

For viewing and observing game activities, the dry period from June to October is ideal due to concentration of animals to limited water sources and clear skies. The wet period offers less crowd attraction with November to May seeing greener landscapes and February is noted for vast herds of wildebeest calving even though some roads might be muddy.

Visitors can take game drives into the crater for wildlife encounters and guided walking safaris along the crater rim which offers breathtaking views and reveals intricate details of the ecosystem. To immerse in the local culture, visitors can visit Maasai bomas or explore Olduvai Gorge. For a bird’s-eye view of the crater, hot air balloon safaris are available.
